Welcome back to another Jets season, loyal readers of Big Dog’s Betting advice. And thank you to the Big Dog himself for having me back for a second season. I’m sure the readers remember all the money we made last season. We started the picks following the Jets bye week, and subsequently went 7-3 for a tidy 33.6% ROI. We aim to eclipse that this season so buckle up.
There were few reasons in 2017 to watch a Jets game unless you had bet on it. The 2018 campaign brings promise in the form of Sam Darnold. He is the franchise savior and the man that will lead the Jets to prosperity, this year and the following decade. Darnold makes his debut against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Monday Night. The Jets are catching a full TD and the line sits at +6.5 points here which is frankly disrespectful for a team on the ascent. But I get it, this team went 1-7 on the road last season and 3-4-1 against the spread as the road team. As for this matchup, Golden Tate is going to feast against Buster Skrine tonight. Matt Stafford is one of the league’s best QBs on third down so it’s important for the Jets to put the Lions into long yardage situations and get them off schedule. The lack of edge rushers will be evident on these third downs and the Jets will need to bring extra guys to create pressure and force hot reads behind the chains. I think Bowles finally has a secondary with which he is comfortable, so I anticipate a lot of blitzes and exotic looks which were his calling card as DC in Arizona. As for the Jets I expect them to try and establish the run and get Darnold comfortable by moving the pocket and cutting the field in half. Bob Anderson has a difficult task going up against D. Slay tonight but the rest of the Jets receivers match up well against a porous Detroit secondary. I expect a lot of yards in this one.
There’s not much reason to expect the recent version of the Jets to go on the road and win in prime time. But that was then and this is now. Samuel Richard Darnold is here to save the day. Here’s an interesting tidbit to share at your watch party tonight – Sam’s middle name comes from his grandfather, Richard “Dick” Hammer, who once was the Marlboro Man. Tonight Darnold channels that familial swagger and leads the Jets to a narrow win, 27-21. Take the points and start Golden Tate in all fantasy formats.
